To the EDITOR of the CARLISLE JOURNAL.
-----
SIR-In your paper of the 4th inst. I noticed a paragraph relating to trials for right on the Commons of Hutton Soil, now under
inclosure, wherein "William CALVERT, Esq. Mr. John SUTTON, and others, tenants of Matterdale, we dissatisfied with the adjudications
of the Commissioners," &c. &c. But your informant has only given you one half of the story, and should have stated also that the
tenants of Matterdale had a verdict in sixteen causes, for which the Commissioners had denied them any right: and Mr. J. SUTTON,
after a long trial, obtained a verdict on his own account (which altogether will entitle the plaintiffs to not less than 800 acres
of common); and in Michaelmas term the defendants applied for a rule to shew cause for a new trial, which was refused, whereby the
verdict of the Jury was confirmed, and the adjudication of the Commissioners set aside.
VERUS.
