We understand it has been determined by the manufacturers of this city to form an association for the detection of persons receiving
embezzled materials from the workmen in the cotton manufactures; and also generally for the protection of the property of the
manufacturers from nocturnal and other depredations.
On the night of Tuesday last, a fire was discovered in a house, in Blackfriars-street, which was extinguished without much
difficulty. The fire originated in the imprudence of a woman who had during the day fired the chimney with a quantity of straw, in
order to clear it of soot; and some of the sparks, it is supposed, had lodged in the timbers connected with the flue. This too
common practice cannot be sufficiently rebrobated [sic]. We ought to add, that it was extremely fortunate the fire was discovered in
time, otherwise the consequences might have been calamitous in the extreme; as the building in question was in the immediate
neighbourhood of a large warehouse containing considerable quantities of gunpowder, pitch, and other inflammable materials, and not
far removed from an extensive wood-yard, hay-lofts, &c.
A correspondent, signing herself "Illa," requests the reason of the useless expenditure of candles in St. Cuthbert's church on the
Wednesday evening; when, as she suggests, half the usual quantity would be sufficient, were the whole congregation to sit down
stairs, and that part only lighted. "Surely" our fair correspondent adds, "none will be so ill-natured as to lock their pews
especially after the frequent exhortations of our endeared Minister to have them open to the reception of all who wish to hear the
word of God who is no respecter of persons."
The Musical Festival closed at Whitehaven on Thursday week. It is said to have been a most happy combination of excellence, both in
the instrumental and vocal departments.
On Thursday last was pulled near the Moor-Guards, in full perfection, a mushroom, which was not less than 23 inches in
circumference.
The anniversary meeting of the Penrith Branch Bible Society was held according to advertisement last Wednesday, when it was very
numerously attended. The proceedings were opened by Christopher CRACKENTHORPE, the chairman, in a very animated manner. The Rev. J.
MERRY, of Newbiggin, delivered a speech on the occasion, full of eloquence and persuasion. He was followed by the Rev. Mr.
HENDERSON, of Carlisle; Mr. HESLOP, of the same place; Dr. THOMPSON, of Penrith; and the Rev. Mr. WATSON, of Edenhall, in zealous
and very impressive addresses.-At the conclusion the accomplished chairman read a printed speech of Dr. GREGORY of a meeting at
Blackheath, on a similar occasion, which for eloquence and enthusiasm cannot be excelled. The subscription was liberal, and the
meeting broke up fully sensible of the great importance of the institution.
During the present week, the weather has savoured much of winter. In many districts the snow lay at some depth; and yesterday we
observed ice, in the vicinity of this town, one-half inch in thickness.
