Shipping News.
Three herring boats had gone out from Maryport, on Monday last, to fish. It came on to blow a heavy gale in the evening from the s.
w.-they made for the harbour and coming close in with it, one of them was literally dashed to pieces:-the crew was with great
difficulty saved.
On Sunday last, the top-mast of a vessel was discovered from Maryport, the vessel having sunk about three miles from that place.
Four boats were manned, and went out to see what she was, when she was made out a sloop; but from where or to whom she belonged is
unknown. We are afraid that all the crew have perished.
On Tuesday noon, a strange sail appeared off Maryport: a pilot went off and brought her in. She is a Spanish dogger from Seville, in
Spain, and bound to Liverpool with cotton and wine; but had been put out of her course by contrary winds.
Two seamen, belonging to the Friends, WILSON, of Maryport, were sent for a raft of wood at some distance from Pictou, North America:
the sea running high and a gale springing up, they were drifted out of the mouth of the channel; one of them, in a desponding tone,
asked the other, saying, "what shall I do now," the reply of the other was (in the true Hibernian style), "Why, if you do not get
home you must write."
By the late boisterous weather, several disasters have occurred at sea.-Yesterday week, the Jane, COPELAND, belonging to Mr.
GILLESPIE, at the Kingholm, was lost off Maryport, with all her crew.-The Marmion, M'LAREN, of Annan, was wrecked off Campbeltown,
in Argylshire, last week;-no lives lost.-Considerable alarm is entertained for the Isabella, of Dumfries, bound from Liverpool to
Derry.-The brig Speculation, which had discharged part of a cargo of wine at Dumfries, on sailing for Gr****w, met with considerable
damage, amongst the sand-beds in the Solway Firth. With much exertion, she however reached Glencaple Quay on Sunday.
A steam-packet has been launched at Selby, to work between York and Hull.-It is supposed this vessel will go the distance (80 miles)
in seven hours!
The Baltic, TOWERS, of Workington, is arrived at Liverpool from America.
We are concerned to state, that the Fame, PARENT, one of the Jamaica fleet which put into Halifax with damage, is arrived off Dover,
and that she sailed from that place on the 15th ult. at which time no account had been received there of the remaining eight missing
vessels.
