The country-gentlemen who attend our Assizes will have an opportunity of joining their patriotic townsmen in contributing to the
subscription for the relief of those who have been left destitute and unprovided for, by the bloody yet glorious victory of
Waterloo.-Englishmen are all the same on great questions; nor can we have a doubt, that the peaceful retirement of the country will
have so far apathized the minds of those who have enjoyed it, as not to sympathize with the feelings of the more busy city.-For
continued list of subscriptions, see adv.
Saturday last, by direction of the Mayor, an inspection took place of the hoops used in the measurement of potatoes, when several
were seized. It is, we understand, the intention of the proper officers to inspect all weights and measures within the circuit of
the corporation privileges.
Yesterday evening, his Majesty's commission for opening the Assize was read in the court-house; after which the Court was adjourned
until this morning, when the business at the Nisi Prius side will commence: the criminal trials will not begin before Monday.
Justice BAYLEY and Baron RICHARDS were escorted into the city by the Sheriff and a large party of gentlemen, attended by a number of
javelin men. The High Sheriff's dinner, in the afternoon, at Mrs. IRVING's, the Crown and Mitre Inn, was well served up, and was
most respectably attended.-For the list of prisoners see last page.
In the garden of Mr. CARRUTHERS, at Botchergate, was this week pulled a green coss lettuce, which exhibited a very singular
appearance. The plant was in breadth 11in. and length 24in. of an oval form. It is what is termed an over-year-plant, and the
surface is entirely covered over with little buds, many of which, at the upper extremity, have shoot forth, to the extent of six or
seven inches; and the upper surface is marked with little vegetating embryos, that afford the appearance of a beautiful crest or
comb.
We rejoice in being able to state, that the road between Carlisle and Glasgow is likely in a short period to be placed in that
condition in which so important an intercourse ought to stand. An able survey and report have been made out; and Government have
agreed to contribute very liberally toward defraying the charge of construction. We hope to be enabled to furnish the reader with
all the particulars in a few days. Meanwhile we may add, that the present line will not be materially departed from; but will be so
much improved by occasional deviations as to render the rise in no part more than about 1 foot in 40.
Our theatrical veteran, Mr. M'CREADY, opens his short campaign for the assize week this evening. We observe that his company
exhibits much novelty, but as we are ignorant of the merits of his new performers, we shall decline giving any remarks upon them. We
must, however, except Mrs. DAVISON, (late Miss DUNCAN); this lady is a tried favourite, and her acknowledged theatrical excellence
will doubtlessly amply remunerate Mr. M'CREADY for the expence to which he must have been subjected by his engagement of so
distinguished an actress.
SKINBURNESS REGATTA.-This entertainment commenced on Wednesday the 26th ult. and never was an occasion of the kind, at Skinburness,
more numerously attended. The sports were excellent, and were keenly relished by the numerous devotees of healthy recreation. Mr.
GRAVES, of the Greyhound inn, gave a handsome silver cup for a boat race, which was won by Mr. Wm. GRAHAM, of Allonby. On Thursday,
Mr. GRAVES gave the sum of 2gs. for a rowing match, which was gained by Mr. Jas. HUGHES, of Maryport,--and the like sum (one guinea
for each day) to be wrestled for. The wrestling matches were well contested, and exhibited no mean display of Cumbrian strength and
agility: on the first day's sport the prize was won by Mr. Harrison IVINSON, of Skinburness, and on the second by Mr. Daniel WAITE,
of Mowbrough.-On the whole, the occasion was felt as a high treat; and we doubt the next celebration of Skinburness Regatta will
boast of an assemblage equally respectable, and probably more numerous.
