On Sunday morning departed hence, to join their gallant comrades on the continent, a detachment of the 3d or King's own

During the week, the innkeepers and others of this city have put in requisition all the painters in order to garnish their
sign-boards with their Christian names, under apprehension of being informed against by some common informers who are supposed to be
travelling the country for the purpose of lodging informations against such unwary persons as are liable to the agreeable visits of
the excisemen, and have strictly to adhere to the formulæ prescribed by the act of Parliament.
The Earl of Lonsdale has presented the Magistrates of this county with a fine marble bust of his Majesty, executed by ROSSI, which
is to be placed in the crown court of the new halls in this city.
The theatrical campaign has closed for the season in this city, and our Thespian veteran, M'CREADY, in his professional line, has
"covered himself with glory""si liceat parva magnis componere"in a manner equal to his brother of the sword. The latter, to carry
on the comparison, has obtained a victory glorious for himself and beneficial we trust to the nation; and the former has in an equal
degree contributed by his personal exertions and his experience in the histrionic art, to render his dramatic corps more efficient
than any we remember in any provincial theatre.
We are happy to find, that what has been denominated the Registering Act, and which has been commented on in our two last Papers, is
postponed until the next Session of Parliament. The country is very much indebted to Mr. FAWCETT, our Member, for his activity and
attention on the subject; and since the consideration of so burthensome a measure is delayed, we hope our readers will not neglect
the opportunity of making themselves well acquainted with the obnoxious principle of the Bill. It is a pledge we owe our children
and posterity to transmit to them the constitution unmutilated: we therefore conjure the freeholders of the county to commune with
each other on the subject, and set their face against an Act that strikes at both our pockets and our freedom.
The arrival in this city of the great intelligence which has exclusively occupied the public mind for some days past, has been
hailed in Carlisle with the greatest, though most orderly, demonstrations of loyalty. In other places within the circuit of our
Paper, we are informed, that a similar spirit prevailedmay the amelioration of the human race be the consequence of these great
occurrences!
In Cockermouth, we are informed, the rejoicing was very great, all orders of people were animated with one spirit, and joy seemed to
pervade every heart.
At Penrith, upon the arrival of the mail, the excellent bells of that place were set a-ringing; and throughout the day the most
rapturous joy universally prevailedevery one gave vent to his feelings in the most deserved praise of the skill and courage of our
illustrious commander, who, after having more than once defeated BONAPARTE's ablest Generals, at last manifested to the world, that
he was the "first Captain of the age," by defeating him who has so long borne that title. In the evening the staff sergeants of the
Local Militia fired nine vollies on the occasion, and the band played several patriotic airs, amidst loud cheering.
On Thursday the 29th ult. were taken in Tarn Wadling, by the people employed by Mrs. CHANDLER, of Armathwaite Castle, two carp of
extraordinary dimensionseach being 24 inches in length, and 14½ in girth.
It is to be hoped that the late important victory will render it unnecessary to embody the Militia, by which two millions of money
will be saved to the public.
