TAYLOR, and Mary OATES, for forcibly taking from Joseph ARMSTRONG a pocket-book, containing £12, 1s.; Thos. John PHILIP, for pig-stealing, transported 7 years. Margt. RITCHIE, for picking pockets, 2 years hard labour in the house of correction. Ezekiel WOOD, for stealing from a waggon, transported 7 years. Jane PATTEN, for grand larceny, 7 years transportation. Thos. SPENCER, for stealing from a waggon, 7 years transportation. David BRADLEY, for having counterfeit money in his possession, imprisoned one year. All the other prisoners were acquitted.
* Thos. RITSON, alias Andrew LENOX (he on this occasion assuming his mother's name), was well known in Carlisle and the neighbourhood. Seven years ago he was convicted at Lancaster Assizes, for breaking into the counting-house of a factory near Kendal, which he had himself assisted in fitting up, and robbing it of bank notes to a considerable amount: he was sentenced to death; but this punishment was commuted for transportation. Before the expiration of the term he was found at large, and apprehended on the 6th January last, in Carlisle, on a charge of having robbed the house of Mrs. MONKHOUSE, of Longwathby, near Penrith, of plate and other articles. He effected his escape from Carlisle gaol, in company with several other persons, on the night of the 20th March, and it was not long afterwards that he committed the crime for which he is now convicted.
Between the night of Sunday and morning of Monday last, a quantity of lead, which had been placed on the roof of the new parsonage-house building in Botchergate, for the purpose of being fixed, was stolen, together with the workman's tools.
A strawberry of the extraordinary weight of 1¼oz. and which measured six inches in circumference, was pulled on Saturday in the garden of Mr. W. AINSLEY, of Head's Nook.
Mr. Robert DAVINSON, of Tarnmoor-rigg, lately pulled a gooseberry of the kind known by the name of Golden Drop, which weighed one ounce and measured five inches round.
There was lately pulled in the garden of Mr. Charles ROOKING, of Kendal, a gooseberry, called Crown Bob, which weighed 1oz. 16gr. and measured in girth, length-ways, 5 inches, and 4⅝ inches across. Others, pulled at the same time, weighed 16dwt. 15gr. and 16dwt. 14gr.
ACCIDENTS.—On Wednesday se'nnight, the body of John COULTHARD, clerk to Messrs. NICHOL and LUDLOW, of Newcastle, warfingers, was found in the Tyne. He was rather intoxicated the preceding night, and is supposed to have walked over the quay.—Same day, in Newcastle, a child was drowned by falling into a vessel of water.—On Monday last, George MILLER, carter to Mr. HEBBERSON, Sheffield and Macclesfield carrier, was killed by the wheel of his team going over his head. In descending a hill, the deceased had neglected to put on the drag: the pressure upon the shaft horse causing some of the gear to be broken, the animals set off, and, in endeavouring to stop them, he fell before the wheel.—Ensign TRAVERS, a fine young man of 20, belonging to the 3d or Prince Regent's own Regiment of R. Lancashire militia, was drowned on the 4th inst. whilst bathing in the Liffey, Dublin.—Yesterday week, 11 persons lost their lives by an explosion at Hepburn colliery.
The report circulated that the Bank of England does not take the Bank Tokens at 5s. 6d. is unfounded, as they are taken at all the Banks and public Offices for that value. Some persons have imposed on the public by buying them for 5s. and exchanging them at the Bank for their full value.
On Wednesday se'nnight, John MOUNSEY, of Longmarton, near Appleby, butcher, put a period to his existence by strangling himself; no cause can be assigned for the rash act.—He was a young man, only married last winter.
It is understood, that next year the respective regiments of Local Militia will assemble as usual, for 14 days training and exercise.
Since York Assizes, John LAW and Robert DAWSON have been committed to York castle for stealing a pocket-book containing five provincial bank notes, &c. from W. PORRITT; also W. GUEST, labourer, for the wilful murder of Geo. HIGHFIELD, and Mary HIGHFIELD for assisting in the same.
On Wednesday last, was launched from the building yard of Messrs. PEAT and Co. of Maryport, a beautiful new vessel, called the EUROPE; the day being fine, the concourse of spectators was immense; many ladies and gentlemen from Carlisle were present.
The following vessels belonging to Maryport have arrived at the undermentioned ports:—The Royalist, ASHBRIDGE, and Elizabeth, WEDGEWOOD, at Liverpool, from the West Indies; the Hornby, REID, at Do. from the Baltic; the Bridget, ASHLEY, at the river Wyre, from Do.; the Isabella, HINDE, and Robert, McCUNE, at Bowness, from North America.
The Fame, BLOMER, of Whitehaven, is arrived in the river Wyre from Riga.
The Lively, BAIN, of Workington, from Newfoundland, bound to Miramichi, was spoken with by the Forth, SIMPSON, from Pictou, on the 23d ult.
