The anniversary of the Penrith Branch Bible Society will, we understand, be held on the 2d of Nov. The Committee of the said Society
have liberally granted thirty testaments for the use of the new gratuitous Sunday School, conducted by a number of worthy
individuals, who are labouring to diffuse the blessings of education amongst 150 poor children.
The Theatre will re-open this night with COLMAN's play of "The Iron Chest."See adv.
Mr. BORTHWICK will open an academy for dancing in this city on the 29th inst.See adv.
CUMBERLAND ASSIZESCommence this day before Sir John BAYLEY, Knt. and Mr. Serjeant MARSHALL (in room of Sir Geo. WOOD, Knt. who is
indisposed).The following is the calendar:
James JOHNSTON (aged 68), charged with stealing a cow, the property of John GILKERSON, Warwick-bridge.
Thomas SPOONER, alias Wm. BECK (44), with being concerned in the burglary committed on the Whitehaven bank in 1809, for which STOKES
and EDWARDS were executed.
Wm. JACKSON (45), with having stolen two bags of letters from the mail-cart travelling from Keswick to Penrith.
Thomas BELSHAM (51), with manslaughter at Whitehaven.
Joseph GRAHAM (31), with a rape on Sarah BUCHANAN.
Robt. DOUTHART (28), with wilfully stabbing Neil GRAY with a knife.
Catherine PRICE (49); Wm. JOUGHIN (21); John JONES (19); and Wm. CORRIS (18), with a riot at Whitehaven.
Robt. HEPPLE, with fraudulently getting into his possession certain bills of exchange and cash notes, of the value of £500, from
John ELLIOT, of Carlisle, Banker, by uttering a bill of exchange for "BATSON, REID, BERRY, & Co." from whom he had no authority so
to do.
Bernard, alias Peter DUFFEY (57); Mary DUFFEY, sen. (55); Mary DUFFEY, jun. (17); Mary SMITH (22); Mary MacGUIRE (32); John DAVIS
(16), with obtaining money on false pretences(committed for further examination).
Eliz. SMITH (45), with stealing from the person of Geo. WITHAM the sum of £48(committed for further examination).
The following are the proceedings at the Crown end at Durham Assizes:
Ann CRAMPTON, of Barnardcastle, widow, aged 40, for barbarously and indecently mutilating Robt. JORDAN, of Barnardcastle aforesaid,
with a case knife; Peter ALLAN, of Easington, aged 42, for stealing a mare from the stable of Matthew DIXON, of Wheatley Hill; John
HALL, of Ash, aged 22, for stealing a gelding from the stable of John BELL, of Goosepool, severally received sentence of DEATH. The
woman was left for execution. The two men were reprieved. John BURRELL, aged 40, late a clerk in the post office at Durham, for
embezzling various sums belonging to his employer, amounting to upwards of 480l. to be transported for 7 years. Jane WALKER, of
Urpeth, aged 20, for stealing plate and apparel in the house of John BOAZMAN, Esq. of Ayecliffe, to be imprisoned one year in the
house of correction. Wm. OLIVER, hawker, aged 42, for passing counterfeit money, to be confined one year in gaol, and give sureties
for good behaviour for two years more. Dorothy CARTER, aged 19, and Martha RODDAM, aged 22, both of Stockton, for stealing two gowns
from a hedge, to be imprisoned 12 months. Eliz. GARDNER, of Ash, aged 40, for stealing a watch and two handkerchiefs from Margaret
HOPPER, of Durham, to be imprisoned 6 months.Against Richard GREY, of Middleton, smith, charged with cutting off the tail of a cow,
no bill was found.
