PUBLIC DINNER. 

 

On Thursday afternoon, according to invitation, a large party of the principal gentlemen of the city and neighbourhood partook of a
very elegant dinner with Henry FAWCETT, Esq. M. P. for Carlisle, at the Crown and Mitre Tavern, when the afternoon was spent in the
most agreeable manner. It has more than once been our duty to allude to the great attention which the worthy Member has paid to the
wishes and interests of his constituents; and we hail, as a happy omen, the reciprocal communication and cordial good will between
him and the citizens,-which, did it universally exist throughout the kingdom, would leave but few avenues for the approach of party
differences, and their concomitant evils.-The following original song was given with great effect by Mr. BENTLEY:- 

 

          Once more the wreath of freedom's won, 

               And Albion's guardian angel cries, 

          Haste, bring the imperial Eagles on, 

               Britons embrace your Great Allies- 

 

          Sons of the North, beneath whose clime 

               Nobly ye fought, and bravely bled- 

          With ardour bow'd at valour's shrine, 

               By venerable BLUCHER led. 

 

          His temples with the laurel bound, 

               Fame leads her daring chieftain on; 

          Europa clasps the Hero round, 

               And shews the world her WELLINGTON. 

 

          See on her shield imperial grav'd 

               Dying MORFAU, by victory led: 

          He triumph'd-fell-his country sav'd, 

               And Rays of Glory crown his head. 

 

          O'erwhelmed with grief, shall genius mourn, 

               And beauty pour the melting sigh 

          On the lov'd Warrior's sacred urn, 

               On those who for their country die! 

 

          The Patriot mind that grasp'd the whole 

               We bless-the dying Hero's form; 

          And venerate the Pilot's soul, 

               Who stood unmov'd amid the storm. 

 

          When time shall wrap the world in flames, 

               And mingled ruins rend the sky, 

          Cumbria shall own a Patriot's name, 

               And FAWCETT shall with Freedom die!
