CITY IMPROVEMENTS.
It is with infinite pleasure we observe the great improvements which the Corporation are making in Carlisle, which will not only
greatly ornament the city, but will greatly tend to the recreation and health of the citizens. The rubbish and part of the wall at
the Irish-gate, which had so long remained a nuisance to the neighbourhood, have been removed, and workmen are now employed in
clearing the whole line of road from thence to the Court-houses; where the ancient wall which supports the steep bank is decayed, it
is repairing, and a parapet is building the whole length. This line of ground will be gravelled, and, when completed, will afford a
pleasant promenade, commanding a very extensive view of the vale of Caldew and the fertile banks of that stream; whilst, in the
back-ground, lofty Skiddaw, Saddleback, &c. and the distant mountains in Westmorland and Scotland, vie with each other in majestic
grandeur. This promenade is contiguous to the Abbey, the walks of which have been greatly improved of late.
We also hear, that it is intended to enlarge the communication between the Abbey gates, opposite Pater-noster-row, and the new line
of walk. By this means, a most enchanting prospect would be afforded from Castle-street along Pater-noster-row; and the value of the
adjacent ground would be considerably enhanced.
Another great improvement has been long in contemplation, viz. a cart-road through the precincts of the west walls, opposite
Eaglesfield Abbey, to communicate with the road leading to Mr. PATTINSON's brewery. There is at present a foot-path in this
direction, but it is both inconvenient and dangerous, especially in wet or frosty weather. A cart-road, in this quarter, is the more
necessary, since there are a number of extensive manufactories in the neighbourhood, the only road to which leads by the
Court-houses, and is both steep, narrow, and in other respects inconvenient.-This projected road would render of considerable value
the waste ground belonging to the Corporation in that neighbourhood, which is at present of little account, and would form a very
excellent communication between the large school-house erecting upon part of it, in the connection of the National Society, and the
city.
Connected with the improvements in that quarter of the city,-Mr. W. GRAHAM is building a house adjoining the site of the
Irish-gates, which, when finished, will not be a little ornamented.-We likewise understand that it is intended to erect new bridges
over the Caldew, so soon as that over the Eden shall be completed; and were the promenade along the south side of the castle,
commonly called the lady's walk, again opened for public accommodation, and continued along the Castle bank towards the workhouse,
Carlisle would be unequalled in those means of healthy recreation, which is so much desirable. Were proper application made
respecting the laying open of the lady's walk, &c. &c. we can have little doubt of permission being obtained.
