CUMBERLAND ASSIZES.

-----

CROWN END.

[continued]

WEDNESDAY, AUG. 24.

RIOT AT WHITEHAVEN.

Catherine PRICE (aged 49), William JOUGHIN (21), John JONES (21) and William CORRIS (aged 18), were charged with being assembled
together, with a number of other persons, in a riotous manner in Whitehaven, on the 15th of July last.

It appeared on evidence that foreign seamen had for some time past been employed in the Whitehaven shipping, to the great umbrage of
the British seamen engaged at that port; who appear to have combined together for the purpose of driving the foreign sailors from
the British market. The result of this combination was insult and ill-usage towards these strangers; consequently, on the 14th of
July some Hanoverian and other foreign sailors lodged a complaint with Mr. STEEL, the Magistrate, against five or six individuals,
and he issued warrants for their apprehension. These individuals being examined before the Magistrates, and not being able to give
security for their future good conduct, were, on the 15th of July, committed to the house of correction. On this account, a
multitude of people assembled tumultuously in the market-place, surrounded the Golden Lion inn, where the Magistrates were
consulting, broke the windows of that house, uttered a variety of threatening expressions against the foreign seamen, and against
the Magistrates for affording them protection, and in a riotous manner attacked and mal-treated the constables who conducted the
above-mentioned persons to prison.

Mr. PONSONBY, a special constable, seized Catherine PRICE, not only in the mob, but in the act of throwing stones and dirt at the
constables.-John JONES and William CORRIS were taken in front of the mob, apparently in the act of encouraging the riot; but no
offensive weapon was in their hands.-Wm. JOUGHIN was seized by the constable in the act of running from the crowd; and there being
no evidence to prove that he countenanced the riotous proceedings, he was acquitted.

The others were found guilty.-C. PRICE to be imprisoned 12 calendar months; and John JONES and Wm. CORRIS, in consideration of the
extraordinary good character they had maintained previous to the unfortunate affair for which they were found guilty-the Judge
limited their punishment to 2 months imprisonment, and to find security for their good behaviour for two years.

*** Thomas SPOONER, otherwise William BECK (aged 44), charged with felony, as being the identical person who stood indicted at the
Assizes holden at the city of Carlisle on the 4th day of August, 1809, for a Burglary committed at Whitehaven, was brought up to the
bar, but as no prosecution ensued, he was discharged.
