DISTRESS IN GERMANY. 

 

AT a General Meeting of the Inhabitants of the City of CARLISLE and its Neighbourhood, holden in the Town-Hall, in the said City, on
MONDAY, the 7th MARCH, 1814, for the purpose of ALLEVIATING THE DISTRESSES OF THE PEOPLE OF GERMANY, 

Rev. THOMAS LOWRY, Mayor, in the Chair; 

A Letter from Henry THORNTON, Esq. Chairman of the Committee in London,-an interesting Memorial from the inhabitants of Leipsic, and
other Documents, were laid before the Meeting; and the following Resolutions were agreed to. 

 

1st. That it appears to this Meeting, from the well authenticated Documents just read, that the Sufferings of the People of Germany
and of other parts of the Continent, arising from the most destructive Warfare with which they have been visited, are most severe;
and have a strong claim upon the Benevolence and Humanity of the British Nation; and this Meeting feels great pleasure in stating,
that unequivocal proofs have been received of measures having been taken, by the Parent Committee in London, for a fair and equal
Distribution of the Money remitted to the Continent for the Relief of the Sufferers. 

 

2d. That a Subscription be immediately entered into, for the purpose of alleviating, in some degree, the Misery which the People of
Germany now labour under. 

 

3d. In order to carry the same into effect with as little delay as possible, the following Gentlemen are hereby appointed a
Committee for the purpose of procuring Subscriptions, and transmitting the amount of the same, by the Mayor, to the Treasurer of the
fund raised in London; viz.

          Mr. ROTHWELL                  |          Dr. JAMES 

          Mr. CARRICK, jun.              |          Mr. HUDSON 

          Mr. WOOD                           |          Mr. MARSHALL 

          Mr. T. STORDY                    |          Mr. LANGCAKE 

          Mr. John ELLIOTT               |          Mr. J. FORSTER 

          The Rev. Mr. FAWCETT      |          Major MOUNSEY 

          Mr. BLOW                            |          Mr. CUST 

 

And the above-named Gentlemen have power to add the names of as many Gentlemen, as are desirous of forwarding this charitable
undertaking. 

 

4th. That Subscription Papers be left for Signatures at the Banking-houses of Messrs. FOSTERs, Messrs. GRAHAM and Co. Messrs. D.
CARRICK and Sons, and Messrs. ELLIOTT and FORSTER. 

 

5th. That the above Resolutions, with the List of Subscriptions, be published in the CARLISLE JOURNAL.

The Mayor having left the Chair, the Thanks of the Meeting were unanimously voted to him for his proper conduct therein.
