The newspapers obviously did not report every death that occurred in the area – otherwise their death columns would have been full of deceased babies! People who died at well above the average age had a much higher chance to be mentioned. Deaths of centenarians were reported all over the country, not just in their local area.

Well, the newspaper clearly says BARBER. But newspapers make lots of mistakes, so you may well be right.
However, the Caledonian Mercury of 03 Mar 1814 also has her husband as Robert BARBER.
But then again, newspapers copied off each other, including copying mistakes...
I couldn't find any other mention of this death, neither as BARBER nor as BARKER.
Petra

Not for a second do I doubt your work, Petra, but just wondering if this could be BARKER rather than BARBER. I have many BARKER family members in Dumfries. Just fishin’ 😊

DEATHS
Thursday last, in Dumfries, Mrs. Ann WHITE, wife of Mr. Robert BARBER, merchant.
