On Monday evening, as the Newcastle stage-coach was coming to Carlisle, it was overturned near to the bridge over the Eden, on
descending Stanwix Bank, owing to the breaking of the pole chain. No injury was sustained by the inside passengers; but, we are
sorry to add, that of four persons outside three were much bruised.
In our account of the fire at Nealhouse, last week, we erroneously stated that the person who had been winnowing in the barn was
John SCOTT, the landlord. John SCOTT, we are requested to state, was the tenant, and not the owner of the premises, and that it was
this latter who had been employed in the barn.
We announced some time ago, the appointment of the Rev. T. LOWRY to the rectory of Bowness:---this we gave from general report.---We
find, however, the truth of the adage, that "fame is a liar,"---for such appointment has not taken place.
On Monday, as Mrs. Sarah MILLBURN was returning from Wigton, her horse took fright and threw her off, whereby she was very much
bruised; but is now considered in a fair way of recovery.
On the evening of the same day, as Mr. Wm. NIXON, of Boustead-hill, was proceeding along the street of Wigton, he unfortunately
encountered a cart, the shaft of which penetrated his horse's breast, and killed it immediately.
Mr. John WILLIS, late of Cockermouth, but now of Wigton in this county, is admitted Master Extraordinary in Chancery.
Lawrence KAWSTORNE, of Penwortham-hall, Esq. is appointed High Sheriff for the county of Lancaster for the year ensuing.
On Tuesday se'nnight a division of the Denbighshire militia, which had volunteered for foreign service, passed through Oxford; and
on Thursday, 180 of the Royal Westmorland militia, who had likewise volunteered, entered that city, on their route to Winchester.
OXONIAN HOSPITALITY.---It is but a compliment due to the members of Queen's college, to inform our readers, that on the arrival of
180 volunteers from the Royal Westmorland militia under the command of Captain BELL, on their way to join the third provisional
battalion at Winchester, the gentlemen of the counties of Westmorland and Cumberland regaled these spirited fellows with a breakfast
and one shilling each, and also entertained the officers at college with a sumptuous dinner, where conviviality prevailed until a
late hour.
The wreck of a vessel, laden with oats, has been discovered on the bank called Robin Rigg, in the Solway Frith, and is supposed to
have been lost during the late storm. Some of the oats have been washed on shore near Saturness, but nothing has been discovered
that can lead to the name of the vessel or the port to which she belongs.-Some persons suppose that the crew escaped in the boat to
the Isle of Man.-We should be happy to confirm this part of the report.
