Hi
Thank you all for the information, it has triggered a flurry of activity
on various search sites by my own genealogist, my wife!
Liz has spent over twenty years researching her side of the family
mainly around Kent and Sussex, where we are now based and, at times
adding some of my rather feeble research into the mix. We both did DNA
tests and this has rekindled my own interests as well as a nudge to get
sorting out the stuff I had from my parents hence my query.
When Dad died in 1996 we found out that Mum had dementia so I recovered
what family material was around in preparation for her move from
Liverpool down to Barnet near my late sister. The book came in to my
care along with another book, which is dated and named and belongs to
one of my known predecessors William Sewell Nicholson.
The Mrs.Graydon mentioned in the front is, we are now certain, my Great
grandmother Margaret Jane Graydon nee Nicholson, a widow for 3 years,
who was living in marine Villas, Port Carlisle at the time with my
grandfather. The research done by my wife has tracked both Martha Jane
and Margaret to the same area of Manchester and both of roughly the same
age. We can only assume that this is where their friendship began. I
have a list of the children and their ages in 1838 and the one of
interest to me is Margaret Irving, my great great grandmother which is
why we think Margaret had the book.
List of children and ages
Jane Wood, 10
Mary Pattinson, 12
Mary Backhouse, 11
Anne Backhouse, 14
Margaret Irving, 13
Mary Anne Wood, 12
Robert Littleton, 12
David Thomson, 15
William Carruthers, 12
John Lawson, 14
William Logan, 14
The book is in a reasonable state considering it is over 100 years old
but I won't be able to copy any pages as I don't think there is any way
of scanning them without risking damage to the spine and bindings.
I am fascinated and amazed at how much knowledge there is in the groups
and, having been retired about four years, I think I might need to add
extending my family tree, guided as always by my wife, to my list of
'things to do in your retirement'!
Thank you to all those who have helped
Stay safe and keep well
