The officers of the Carlisle regiment of Local Militia have received the thanks of the Prince Regent, for their zeal in offering
their services under the new Act of Parliament.
Yesterday, a little before 12 o'clock, some people, passing along the road between Etterby and Stanwix, heard a scream which seemed
to proceed from the river Eden. On examination, they discovered the body of a woman partly lying upon the bank and partly in the
water, at the confluence of the Eden and Caldew, at which place the water was not frozen: near the spot were laid her shoes. The
body was removed to the village of Etterby, by direction of the parish officers: but we have not heard of her being identified. The
following is a description of her person:low stature, black eye-brows, large nose, long visage, sallow complexion, and very meagre.
Her clothes were exceedingly ragged, and, in every respect, she appears to have been a very distressed object.
BIBLE ASSOCIATION.On Tuesday evening last was held in the Town-Hall of this city a meeting, to consider the propriety of forming a
Bible Association, for the purpose of supplying the labouring classes with Bibles and Testaments, at reduced prices, by means of
small weekly subscriptions.Rowland FAWCETT, Esq. in the chair. The meeting was most numerously attended; several gentlemen
delivered their sentiments on the beneficial effects likely to result from such Associations as that in contemplation; the most
pleasing unanimity prevailed throughout, and the object of the meeting was entered into with alacrity by all ranks. The working
classes have now the privilege of purchasing "the word of life" at 40 per cent. below the cost price; and, as was stated by one of
the gentlemen who addressed the meeting, the labourer may now purchase a Bible at the price of one day's labour, whilst, before the
invention of the art of printing, it would have cost him about 14 years of labour, at 1½d. per day (the then price of labour) to
procure a Bible, fairly written, which was never estimated to be worth less than £30!
We are glad to observe, that the affairs of the Carlisle Dispensary are in so flourishing a condition as represented in the Report
contained in first pagesee adv.;and we cannot for a moment doubt, that the liberal assistance of the inhabitants will be withheld
from an establishment which has achieved so much good. The number of children inoculated with the vaccine matter, during the past
year, amounts to 112; nor need it to be pressed upon all ranks, that its exertions in this respect alone tends to abate a loathsome
disease, which spares neither rich nor poor.
The farmers and others in the eastern parts of the county will, for the future, be accommodated with two additional annual fairs, to
be held at Brampton, in the months of April and October.See Adv.
Every one to his taste.A poor woman in this neighbourhood, who died a few days ago, lived and slept with a pig for many years!
Tho in want of the commonest necessaries of life, she absolutely refused nine guineas for her beloved grunter and bed-fellow; from
whom she was only separated by the cruel hand of death!
The Royal Westmorland Militia marched from Liverpool on Tuesday last the 1st instant, on its route to Manchester. One hundred and
seventy-four volunteers for extended service marched from this corps on the 28th ult. under the command of Capt. BELL, to join a
Provisional Battalion now forming at Winchester, to be commanded by Sir W. W. WYNNE. Three Captains, two Lieutenants, and one
Ensign, from the Royal Westmorland, accompanied the above detachment.
On Tuesday last, John TORDIFF, of Angerton, was convicted before the Rev. Robert WATTS and the Rev. Richard MATTHEWS, two of his
Majestys justices of the peace for this county, in the penalties of 20s. each, and costs, for tracing two hares in the snow.
Mr. Justice LE BLANC and Mr. Justice CHAMBRE have chosen the Northern Circuit for the ensuing assizes.
The Younghusband, Capt. FISHER, of Workington, from Cork, bound to the West Indies, is taken by an American privateer.
Two vessels belonging to Maryport arrived at Whitehaven on Sunday;the Harmony, from North America, ten weeks passage; and the
Friends, from Spain, in 30 days.
It is much to be feared, that the sloop Garret, HARPER, from Dublin to Whitehaven, foundered off Derbyhaven on the 17th ult. the day
after she left the former place.
