Mr. Colin MacKNIGHT, of Newtown, near Carlisle, has a sow which has produced 43 pigs in twelve months; viz. 22 at the first litter,
and 21 at the second.
On the 12th inst. William GRAHAM, of Longtown, shoemaker, was convicted in the penalty of £5, for killing game in the parish of
Kirkandrews-upon-Esk.
The frost yet continues with unabated severity, which has occasioned much inconvenience, most of the mills being at a stand, and the
cattle in great distress for want of water.This week, the thermometer has been so low as 28 below 0!The cold weather visibly
affects elderly people and valetudinarians.In the church-yard of St. Mary's alone, in this city, on Sunday last, there were not
less than ten burials.
Early on Tuesday morning, one of the volunteers from the East York Militia was discovered without the Irish-gate, lying upon the
ground in a state of insensibility. He was conveyed to the military hospital, but soon after expired. The unfortunate man had been
drinking freely on the preceding evening; and it is supposed that his death was owing to him lying down to sleep, under the
influence of ardent liquor and intense cold.
On the morning of Wednesday se'nnight, Mr. NICHOLSON, of Currigg, near Hesket-New-Market, Cumberland, was found dead in a
shed,supposed owing to the inclemency of the weather.
CAUTION.In December last, D. WRIGHT, of Kendal, was convicted in the penalty of £10, for selling goods, in Ulverston, without a
hawker's and pedlar's licence; against which conviction WRIGHT appealed to the sessions, on Tuesday se'nnight, when the same was
confirmed with costs.
On Wednesday, the 5th inst. the Antiquarian Society of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, held its first anniversary meeting in its apartments in
the castle of that town. His Grace the Duke of Northumberland is its patron, whose office is for life; and the following officers
are chosen for the present year:President, Sir J. E. SWINBURN, Bart.; 3 vice-presidents, Sir C. M. L. MONK, Bart. James LOSH, and
John CARR, Esqrs. 2 Secretaries, the Rev. John HODGSON, and Mr. John ADAMSON. Treasurer, Mr. John BELL. 12 Council, the Rev. John
COLLINSON, the Rev. Wm. TURNER, and Messrs. Thomas DAVIDSON, John MURRAY, Thos. LOGAN, John BRUMELL, David STEPHENSON, Joseph
FORSTER, John STANTON, G. A. DICKSON, E. CHARNLEY, and J. T. BROCKETT. 3 Censors, the two Secretaries, and the Rev. W. TURNER. This
society was instituted in January last, for the purpose of investigating the antiquities of the North of England, but more
particularly those of the counties of Northumberland, Durham, and Cumberland. Their collection of objects connected with the glory,
the warfare, religion, and customs of the several tribes of mankind, that have tenanted these districts, increases rapidly; every
monthly meeting has added to its stock; and they now look forward with confidence to see it, not only daily augmented by donations
of inscribed altars and tablets, coins, armour, &c. but also of ancient manuscripts and books, allied to the subjects of their
enquiry. They have already re-printed Grey's Chorographia, and their transactions for the last year are preparing for the press. All
communications to this body are to be directed to the secretaries, who will lay them before the council meetings for acceptance.
The Rev. M. MANNERS, A. M. of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, is presented by the Lord Chancellor to the valuable Rectory of Tholton, in
Norfolk.
On Saturday last, Wm. DUNSLEY, Esq. was chosen Lord Mayor of York for the ensuing year.
The Royal Westmorland Militia have received their route for Chester.
Three shops were attempted to be broken on Saturday night last, at N. Shields: in two instances the villains succeeded in carrying
off goods to a considerable amount.
On Sunday, a boy was drowned in the Tyne, at Newcastle, whilst playing upon the ice.
The following vessels belonging to Workington sailed from Cork with the fleet on the 5th inst. for the West Indies, viz.Sarah,
BROWN; Integrity, MORDY; Mary Fell, WILDERIDGE; Mars, WILLIAMSON; Nancy, WILLIAMSON; Johns, PATTINSON; Seaton, SCOTT; Caster,
WINDER; Crosby, McGAA; Wilton, GROME; Russel, CARR; Eagle, CANNON; Derwent, BELL; Albion, THOMPSON; Ann, HARRISON; William Fell,
BOAN; Ardent, KENDAL; Albion, ROBINSON; and Shaw, HOLLIDAY.
We are sorry to announce an accident which happened on board his Majesty's ship Clarence, on the 3d of last month, off Ushant.
During the chase of the Clorinde and Sybille, French frigates, William THOMPSON (a young man belonging to Workington) and four other
brave seamen were lost from the maintop-gallant yard, to the great grief of their companions, by whom they were much beloved.
The Ulysses, BROWN, of Maryport, is arrived at Lancaster from America.
