On Sunday night last, about six o'clock, a daring robbery was committed by two footpads, who attacked a gentleman on horseback,
about two hundred yards south of Quarry Gate, on the road from Carlisle to Penrith. After dragging him off his horse, each presented
a pistol to his head; searched all his pockets and pocket-book; and took from him his watch, and the money he had upon him. After
which they proceeded on the road towards Penrith, until they were pursued by some people at the public-house at Quarry Gate, who
overtook them before they had got above half a mile further; but the pursuers being unarmed, the robbers leaped over the hedge, and
made their escape eastward. The gentleman was not suffered to make that narrow observation of their dress, &c. as to be able to give
a proper description of their persons.
Armathwaite Hunt will be on Wednesday first. (SEE ADV.)
About three o'clock on the morning of Wednesday last, a dreadful fire broke out in the dwelling house of Mr. Matthew RUSSELL, sen.
of Maryport, which it entirely consumed, together with a great part of the valuable furniture. Had it not been for the prompt and
uncommon exertions used by those who assisted in extinguishing the flames, it is more than probable, that the whole range of
buildings would have been consumed.
The herring fishery on the coast of Maryport is at present very good; and as large fish are caught, as are generally taken in June.
They were sold in Maryport, on Wednesday last, at four for a penny.
John BALDWIN, Esq. has been elected Mayor of Lancaster.
The Royal Lancashire militia, it is supposed, are destined to embark for Ireland.
The Archbishop of York has been pleased to institute the Rev. Jonathan HOLMES to the rectory of Kildale, void by the death of the
Rev. John BROWN, on the presentation of Robert B. LIVESEY, Esq. patron.
