Saturday 26 Oct 1811   (p. 3, col. 2 + 4)

 

An inquest was held on Saturday, in this city, upon one TELFORD, who fractured his skull a day or two previously by falling down the
stairs of a public house in Castle street, where he lodged. 

 

Another accident, occasioned by the reprehensible neglect of persons not having hold of their horses by the head.-On Saturday last,
a horse in Castle-street took fright, at the beating of a drum belonging to a recruiting party. In its rapid progress, it overturned
a stand with pottery ware, and did damage to the amount of several pounds; and was not secured before several injuries were
sustained. 

 

An apple-tree, in the garden of Mr. UNDERWOOD, of Newtown, near this city, the fruit of which was cropt about a fortnight ago, is
again covered with fine blossoms. 

 

There is now growing upon a pear tree, in Mr. George BLYTHE's garden, innkeeper, at the Salutation Inn, Penrith, a second crop, in a
thriving state. 

 

A French baking pear, upwards of 14 inches, and a cat-head apple, 13 inches in circumference, were lately pulled in the garden of
Mr. GRAVES, of Rickerby. 

 

A potatoe was lately taken up at Linstock, near this city, by Mr. BAINBRIDGE, which weighed not less than 3lbs. 11oz.-of the species
known by the name of the bullock potatoe. 

 

On Saturday last, the remains of Capt. William CHRISTIAN, (lately mentioned in the Journal, as being lost on the coast of the Isle
of Man,) was conveyed from the island to Workington, and thence escorted to Maryport, about seven o'clock at night, by several
gentlemen. The corpse was interred on Sunday evening, attended by the greatest concourse of people ever seen on a funeral occasion
at that place. 

 

On the 18th inst. the Rev. W. RHODES, B. D. was instituted to the vicarage of Tadcaster, on the presentation of Lord Egremont. 

 

The Rev. Joseph THEXTON has been instituted by the Lord Bishop of Chester, on the presentation of the Chancellor of the Duchy of
Lancaster, to the vicarage of Beetham, in Westmorland, vacant by the death of the Rev. W. HUTTON. 

 

Wednesday, on the resignation of his father, the Rev. Wilfrid HUDDLESTON, A. M. was unanimously elected Minister of St. Nicholas's
Chapel, in Whitehaven. 

 

On Monday last, the Right Hon. Lawrence DUNDAS, Lord Mayor, was without opposition elected M. P. for York, in the room of the late
Sir W. M. MILNER, Bart. 

 

On the 21st. inst. the John and Sarah, JOHNSTON, of Maryport, passed by that place on her passage from Mirimachi to Port-Carlisle,
all well. She left at that place, the Industry, HARRISON; Lark, MITCHINSON; Union, KELLET; Harrison and Tombs, HARRISON, of
Maryport; and Watson, GREGG, of Workington. 

 

The Agnes, BLAKE, of Maryport, is arrived at Quebec, outward bound, all well. 

 

On Thursday se'nnight, the Nicholson, burthen 171 tons, (built by Mr. COWEN); and on Monday the Comet, intended for a Liverpool
trader, and built by Messrs. W. STITT and Co. for Messrs. BARKER and Sons,-were launched at Whitehaven.
