It was stated in a paragraph in the Carlisle Journal of the 21st instant, that Joseph GRAHAM, of Brampton, innkeeper, was convicted
in the penalty of Forty Shillings, for cutting wood in Brampton moat. The circumstances of the case (we are desired to state) are as
follow:-Joseph GRAHAM was appointed one of the stewards for conducting the races at Brampton, on the 31st of July last; and as it
has been usual for other stewards to cut a stick or pole for a turning post, he did no more than order a joiner in the town to cut
one for that purpose; but the stick or pole was not applied to his own use, but merely to the above purpose.

CAUTION.-A few days ago, a respectable farmer in Bewcastle was convicted in the penalty of 20l. before two Magistrates in this city,
for having in his employment a deserter from the Royal Artillery, knowing him to be so.

In our paper of the 4th of June last, we noticed a remarkable circumstance of the sudden ebbing and flowing of the tide in this
harbour on Friday the 31st of May.-(A similar circumstance was also observed at Plymouth and other places.)-It now appears that two
days before, a violent shock of an earthquake, was felt at Cape Town (Good Hope). The situations of the two places are, long. 3 deg.
35 min. West, lat. 54 deg. 25 min. North; and long. 18 deg. 23 min. East, lat. 33 deg. 56 min. South.-Whitehaven Packet.

The Right Hon. L. DUNDAS, Lord Mayor of York, has offered himself as a candidate for the representation of the city of York, in the
room of Sir W. M. MILNER, deceased.

The Bolton, BOWMAN, of Maryport, from America, is arrived at Carse, all well.

DISPATCH.---The Pilgrim, BELL, a galliot, of Maryport, passed the Mull of Galloway on her way to the North of Ireland with a cargo
of coals on a Sunday---she was discharged, and passed it on the next Sunday on her way to Maryport; and, on the following Sunday,
passed it again on her way to Ireland with another cargo of coals.

Saturday night, the Argo, MELLON, in ballast from Ireland, went on shore near the rocks, near Parton.

Thursday se'nnight, a fine vessel, called the Bransty, (burden 104 tons) was launched from the building yard of Messrs. T. and J.
BROCKLEBANK, of Whitehaven.

On Sunday last, there was a severe storm of thunder and rain at Portpatrick.-The brig Economist, of Maryport, loaded with bullocks
and swine, and bound to some part in England, was nearly lost opposite the Mull of Galloway; however, she, with considerable
difficulty, got into the harbour at Portpatrick; but, in coming in, she was within a few yards of being dashed to pieces against the
rocks at the mouth of the harbour. She had lost her fore-top gallant mast, and had suffered otherwise considerably in her
rigging.-The crew were all safe.

Another sloop, also belonging to Maryport, was on the above day driven into the same harbour, but without suffering any damage.
