On Saturday last, the Rev. Robert Philip GOODENOUGH, A. M. was inducted to the 2d prebendal stall in our Cathedral, as successor to
Dr. HUDSON, deceased.

A very desirable residence, called the HILL, offers itself to the notice of any gentleman who wishes for a delightful retreat in the
neighbourhood of Gilsland Spa.-See Adv.

A dividend will be paid to the creditors of Messrs. SURTEES, BURDON, and Co. late Bankers, on the 16th of this Month.-See Adv.

Wilson CUTHBERTSON has been committed to our goal [sic], charged with stealing a lamb from Andrew DONALDSON, a farmer near Flimby.

Lancaster Assizes commenced on Wednesday last. There are 46 prisoners for trial, many of whom, we are sorry to say, are charged with
capital offences. There are four charged with wilful murder, and 8 with manslaughter.

INQUESTS.-It is our melancholy duty to record the following misfortunes, which have lately occurred; and of which inquests were
taken before Richard MULLENDER, coroner:-On Monday afternoon, some boys nutting in the fields near Aglionby, a village in the
neighbourhood of Carlisle; discovered the body of a man lying in a ditch, in such a state of putrefaction, that on attempting to
raise it, the head parted from the trunk! It subsequently appeared that it was the remains of an old man, who about five weeks ago
had left the town of Brampton in a state of lunacy, and had not since been heard of.-Verdict, Found Dead.-Last week, at Johnby, in
this county, a woman, between 30 and 40 years of age, in a fit of despair, in consequence of pregnancy, cut her throat with a razor
so desperately, that death almost immediately ensued.-Verdict, Lunacy.-At Alston, and at Woodside, (near Wigton,) two men were found
dead in bed; as also three others in other parts of the County.-Verdicts, Died by the Visitation of God.

The action brought by the Lord of the Manor of Cumwhinton and Coathill, against a person of Wetheral, for violently assaulting his
game keeper, and taking a hare from him, killed on the aforesaid manor, has been settled by the person acknowledging his fault, and
paying the expences incurred.

Yesterday week, Baron WOOD, the High Sheriff, &c. honoured the Lancastrian School with a visit, and expressed their most unqualified
approbation of the principles on which it is conducted, and the order, regularity, and improvement of the children. The latter,
indeed, is beyond all expectation-instances having occurred, wherein boys of not more than eight years of age have, in the short
period of four months, being taught to read with correctness, and write a very fair hand; though on being received into the school,
they scarcely knew a letter of the alphabet. The advantage of these institutions is now so universally admitted, that it might be
deemed an insult to the understanding of our readers, were we to enlarge upon it; and should it ever be deemed expedient to erect a
school-room sufficiently large to accommodate all those who are unable, yet desirous to obtain moral and religious instruction, (to
effect which, we understand, it is in serious agitation) we have no doubt the inhabitants of Carlisle, and others, will strenuously
support so beneficent a purpose. In this case, it is much more than probable that the school would support itself, and the
inhabitants be exonerated from being called upon for the future.

The new comet, of which an account has lately appeared in the public prints, is visible in this city. The appearance is so striking,
that any person looking towards the north-west part of the horizon, cannot fail of seeing it. It appears as a bright nucleus,
surrounded with a large coma without a tail.

Partridge shooting commenced on Monday.
