MANSLAUGHTER.
Juan ROCA was indicted on a charge of manslaughter,-that he, on the 21st October last, on board the St. Raymond, a Portuguese
vessel, then lying in Whitehaven harbour, did strike Pedro BUSO with a knife or dagger, which occasioned his death.
Thomas HARE proved, that he was on board the Nymph, of Whitehaven, on the day in which the prisoner was charged with the crime. He
observed the prisoner and another man scuffling together:-he in consequence went on board the St. Raymond, and found the deceased
weltering in his blood, which proceeded from his throat.
Thomas PAISLEY, of the excise, was on board the ship Nymph in October last. Seeing some scuffling in the foreign vessel, he boarded
it, and saw the prisoner and three others on deck; among whom was the deceased, who took the prisoner by the collar, and struck him
three times very hard. After enduring this treatment for some time, the prisoner lost all patience, and drawing a knife, stabbed him
over the shoulder of another person.
Mr. BENSON, coroner, also proved the fact.
In his defence, the prisoner, (who throughout the trial had the advantage of an interpreter), stated that the deceased struck him-he
knew not for what: and that he struck in return.-Guilty of Manslaughter. To be confined six months, and fined 1s.
