CUMBERLAND ASSIZES.

These Assizes commenced yesterday.-In the morning, the Ancient Fraternity of Freemasons, as a token of the very great esteem in
which J. LOSH, Esq. the High Sheriff, is held, met that Gentleman at St. Nicholas, in their respective habiliments, &c.-The
procession then moved forward into the city, in the following order:-

                              Javelin men, on horseback,

                                   Masonic Procession,

                                With Flags, Regalia, &c.

                                     Sheriff's Carriage,

Drawn by four most beautiful black horses,

                                 Gentlemen's Carriages.

The Procession was closed by a great number of the Tenants

of the High Sheriff, on horseback.

Never, on any similar occasion, were greater or more deserved respect and marks of attachment shewn to any Gentleman.

In the afternoon, the Gentlemen in the Commission of the Peace, and a large party of the High Sheriff's friends, partook of a most
sumptuous dinner at the Crown and Mitre. Not less than 200 sat down to table; when the excellence of the viands was not the best
part of the entertainment. The polite deportment of the host, and his engaging cheerfulness, infused into all that pleasure which
sensual enjoyment alone could not give.

After dinner, the High Sheriff, attended by his guests, and escorted by Javelin men, proceeded without the city; and having met the
Judges of Assize, Sir Alan CHAMBRE and Sir George WOOD, conducted them to the Town Hall; where the usual commission being read, the
Court was adjourned to this day (Saturday).

To the credit of the County, the Calender [sic] contains the names of but few prisoners.-We shall in our next give a report of the
trials, as well as of the causes at Nisi Prius.
