On Thursday last, the Cumberland Troop of Light Horse was inspected by Colonel RAWDEN, who expressed his entire satisfaction of the
discipline of the corps, and of the state of their equipment.

We are happy to find, that our worthy Member, Mr. FAWCETT, ever attentive to the interests of his constituents, as well as the
interest of every inhabitant in Cumberland, has, by his activity and assiduity to Parliamentary business, drawn the attention of the
public to a Bill now pending in Parliament, for the alleged amendment of the Poor Laws. The perspicuous manner in which he pointed
out the obnoxious clauses in the Bill induced the householders of this city to sign a petition, hostile to the measure, which has
been presented to Parliament. It is much to be wished that Members of Parliament for other districts would adopt similar vigilance,
and watch the progress on many Bills, calculated, as the author of the Bill always alleges, to meliorate the condition of Society,
but often detrimental to its best interests. If Parliamentary men would more frequently correspond with their constituents, on the
enactment of laws, many crudities and inconsistencies would be obviated. Sensible men in the lower walks of life, from experience,
are in many instances better able to tell how different laws, in their respective districts, may be likely to check the crime, and
meet the end proposed, than those who spend too much of their time in the giddy vortex of fashion.

We have authority to state, that Sir E. BRIDGES has altered the clause in the Poor's Bill, which made seven years residence gain a
settlement, so as not to extend to manufacturing towns. It is understood that the bill is to lay over till next Session. There is
another most oppressive clause in this Bill, which relates to the power of gaining a settlement by a service of one year in one
place, whether as hired servant or not. We particularly recommend the public to pay attention before it pass into law. We observe
from the number of circulars the overseers of the poor of this city have received, that Petitions are preparing against the
obnoxious Bill from almost every town in the six northern counties; and not without just reason, for we have no hesitation in
declaring, that if the Bill pass into law in its present shape, it would soon annihilate all property in manufacturing towns.-So
soon as the Bill is printed, we shall, if necessary, communicate its chief contents to the public.

On Saturday night, or early on Sunday morning last, considerable damage was done in the ornamental plantation adjoining the Carlisle
Cotton Twist Company's Mill-several trees being destroyed, and other wanton injuries committed. It is much to be desired, that the
wanton perpetrator or perpetrators of this malicious action be discovered and brought to punishment.

On the night of Wednesday last, the bank of Messrs. ELLIOT and FOSTER, Scotch-street, was burglariously entered; but we are happy to
add, that the villains, in a great measure, were disappointed in their object, as Mr. ELLIOT, very prudently, never suffers property
of value to be left in the bank at night. Some bank papers, &c. of but little value, were however taken away. As a plough coulter
and bill-hook were left upon the premises; these may probably lead to the detection of the offenders, for the discovery of whom a
large reward is offered.-See Adv.

The Rev. T. FLEMING, A. M. has been presented by the Earl of Lonsdale to the rectory of Bootle, in the County of Cumberland, void on
the cession of the Rev. J. SATTERTHWAITE, A. M. F. A. S.

Not less than eight persons, charged with heavy crimes, have been committed to Lancaster castle since our last.

The Northumberland Militia have received a notice from the War-Office, that they are to be disbanded, at Alnwick, on the 24th inst.
