Some very interesting news stories.
It is just as well that I am not living in 1814 as I could certainly imagine myself spending a few days in the House of Corrections for swearing!
Thanks again for transcribing and sharing with us.

Saturday 21 May 1814   (p. 3, col. 3-4)

Thursday last being Ascension-day, which from time immemorial has been held as a kind of jubilee by the Freemen of this city; the flags of the incorporated trades were displayed from the respective guilds. In the morning a saddle and bridle, given by the Freemen, were run for upon Kingmoor, near this city, the former of which was won by Mr. Geo. FORSTER, of Warwick-bridge. A shot-belt, hat, cup, and gloves, were likewise contested for upon the ground, in athletic sports, which created considerable amusement.—In the afternoon, Mr. Mayor, the Corporation, and a select party of gentlemen, dined together at the Bush inn, after visiting the guilds. Rowland FAWCETT, Esq. brother to H. FAWCETT, Esq. M. P. for the city, likewise paid his respects to the trades, in the name of his brother, and assured them of his (the Member's) regard for their happiness and interest, over which, as their independently-elected representative, it would ever be the pride and study of his life, so long as he held that honourable situation, to watch and protect.

SINGULAR FACT.—A few days ago, at Seathill, in the neighbourhood of this city, a hen, forsaking the humble earth, contrived, by fluttering from one branch to another, to reach the nest of a magpie, which was situated in the branches of a fir-tree, and, after a severe action, having compelled her to yield the prize of victory, she took possession of the nest, which she statedly visited. The curiosity of the neighbours being excited, by means of a long ladder one of them ascended to the spot, and was not a little surprised to find in the nest a fine brood of fifteen chickens that had been hatched by the aspiring bird.---Of the truth of this singular circumstance in the annals of ornithology we are assured on the most respectable authority.

On Saturday last, the Rev. Joseph HALLIFAX was unanimously elected, by a full meeting of freeholders, to the head mastership of the free grammar-school of Wigton, vacant by the death of the Rev. Samuel HALLIFAX, his father, who had held the same situation for upwards of 55 years.

We understand, with pleasure, that more than ordinary activity has recently been exerted at Penrith, in strictly enforcing our laws of the Sabbath. From a hint given by one of our Correspondents on the subject of a Sunday School Union, in Carlisle, the plan of going about to invite playing children either to go to a Sunday School, or lodge them in the house of correction, has been resorted to with happy effect: in consequence of this the gratuitous Sunday School was, last Sunday afternoon, greatly increased,—the church much more numerously attended. On Sunday the 6th inst. a boy, convicted of playing, &c. refusing to go to the Sunday School was ordered to the house of correction by Wm. WILSON, Esq. who has pledged himself to be active in suppressing disorderly characters, and is determined rigorously to enforce the observance of the Sabbath. We would hope this praise-worthy conduct will lead to beneficial effects, and will be more generally imitated.---A proper opportunity presents itself here to observe that these are, indeed, happy days, when justice is so finely tempered: when youth may accept deliverance from infamy, so much to their own advantage,---find a place of being taught gratis, with pleasure, in exchange for a house of opprobrium; a place where they will be taught not only to avoid what will, in the end, eventually lead themselves to disgrace, but where they may be made useful to others by their changed conduct.

The following receipt is offered to the notice of the public, as a cheap and efficacious remedy in scurvy and other cutaneous affections, by Mr. WISE, of Maryport, who has successfully employed it amongst his patients for upwards of 20 years. Take dandelion (roots and tops), water cresses, and spruce fir tops, of each two pounds; boil them in five quarts of water to three quarts:---strain it into bottles, of which take half a pint every morning one hour before breakfast.

CAUTION.—On Saturday a pauper, belonging to the township of Whitehaven, was convicted before a magistrate in the penalty prescribed by the Act for the suppression of prophane swearing; which being unable to pay, she was committed to the House of Correction for ten days.

On the morning of yesterday week, the True Briton coach, from Leeds to York, in passing the other coach while delivering a parcel at Tadcaster, came in contact with the splinter bar, and was overturned, by which Matthew IRISH, the coachman, was killed.

Of the prevailing fashion of purchasing old books at very high prices, a striking instance occurred some time ago, when a collection of the Old Bailey Sessions Papers, was sold for £300. A person, having expressed a desire to know who could have given so high a price for such a work, was told by a wag, that it was purchased by "the American Government for the use of their Genealogists."

We hear that twenty regiments of regular militia will be disbanded on the 24th of July.—A second reduction will take place on the 24th of September; and the last on the 24th of November.

The body of a blind fiddler was found on Sunday morning, in a draw-well, at the head of Gateshead, Durham, into which it is supposed he had fallen the preceding night.---And on Thursday se'nnight, a fine boy, 13 years of age, son of Mr. WILKINSON, of the Union mill, near Newcastle, was struck by one of the mill-wands, of which he died on Saturday.

Between 11 and 12 o'clock on the night of Sunday se'nnight, a cow-house belonging to R. J. LAMBTON, Esq. of Lumley Park, was discovered to be on fire, which was not got under before two valuable cows and a one-year old calf were destroyed, and a third cow much burnt.

Last Tuesday, being the day appointed for the rejoicings in Newcastle, in celebration of the late glorious events, the Mayor, attended by the Magistrates, &c. &c. walked in procession to the West Gate, where the foundation stone of the intended Hospital for poor freemen and widows was laid with the usual ceremonies.—In the evening one of the most brilliant illuminations took place which was ever exhibited.

Mr. Jon. WESTRAY, of Great Broughton, has a cow which, though only seven years old, has brought forth ten calves.
