ILLUMINATIONS
IN HONOUR OF THE LATE GREAT EVENTS.
----------
"ON EARTH PEACE-GOOD-WILL TOWARD MEN."
----------
[continued]
In the centre window of Mr. James FORSTER's house, above the door, was a large transparency representing a medallion of Alexander,
Emperor of Russia, supported on one side by a Russian Soldier, and on the other side by Fame. The lower windows on each side of the
door had four small Transparencies in each, viz:-G. III. R. and a Crown encircled by a Wreath of Laurel in one, and G. P. R. with a
Prince's feather, &c. in the other to correspond.
Mr. John FORSTER's house, Fisher-street, displayed a full length female figure, representing Fame displaying a medallion of Marquis
Wellington.
At Mrs. WARWICK's, Fisher-street, we observed the following transparent representations:-France and Genius in the act of crowning a
Monument, on which the names of NELSON, ABERCROMBY, MOORE, &c. are inscribed: Inscription, "Sacred to the Memory of those brave
Heroes who have fallen in defence of the liberties of mankind."
The following device exhibited by Mr. CONNELL, of the same street, proved very attractive to John Bull, and caused much mirth:-In
the middle window of the first floor was placed a transparency, stiled "The Dutch Night Mare," being a ludicrous representation of
the effect of the late glorious Revolution in Holland upon the mind of BONAPARTE: it exhibited the Tyrant asleep, his breast being
charged with the weight of no ordinary sized Dutchman, who was delineated in the act of waking the Ex-Emperor with a violent
emission of his furious breath; in the foreground was the crown of BONAPARTE, run through by a sword. The whole was surmounted by
the Crown of Great Britain in full radiance, forming a striking allusion to the present times. Over the entrance door was the
following motto, "Old England for ever."
The Court-house-A figure of Justice, with her emblems, and the very apposite inscription of "Justice Triumphant." Above, the Prince
of Wales's Feathers.
The principal of the Transparencies were, we understand, executed by Mr. Matthew NUTTER, a young man of very promising abilities.
WIGTON, April 20.-On Monday night last, on account of BONAPARTE's Abdication, a general Illumination took place here, which was the
most brilliant ever remembered in the place. The candles were lighted at 8 o'clock, and extinguished at 11: at which time, much to
the credit of the inhabitants, they dispersed in peace and good order.---The greatest harmony and good humour prevailed the whole
night. Much praise is due to the Rev Mr. MATTHEWS for the kind attention he paid to the public, in opening his court-gates that they
might the better view the windows and green house, which were brilliant above description.
BRAMPTON, April 22.-Yesterday, in honour of the Allies entering Paris, and of the Abdication of the Arch-Oppressor, the inhabitants
of this place evinced their loyalty and joy by the most enthusiastic yet decorous rejoicings. In the afternoon the principal
gentlemen met at the different inns, attended with the town's band of music and a white flag, decorated with white ribbons, when
many toasts appropriate to the happy occasion were drank with loyal fervour. At six o'clock they proceeded to the cross to meet the
other inhabitants, who were regaled with several barrels of ale, &c.; the horses of the dray, which brought the ale, were ornamented
with white ribbons, and preceded by music.---A general Illumination took place, with various devices: the band paraded the streets,
playing numerous loyal tunes, and the whole passed off, as it ought, with the greatest hilarity and peaceable conduct. Much praise
is due to T. RAMSHAY, Esq. for many patriotic toasts, and his able conduct in preventing accidents, by ordering constables to
patrole the streets, that no bonfires, &c. might be on the occasion.
LONGTOWN, April 22.-Yesterday, in honour of the present long-desired happy events, which have occurred. through the unparalleled
perseverance of this great and powerful country, Netherby, the hospitable mansion of Sir James GRAHAM, was most splendidly
illuminated, as were also Arthuret, the residence of the Rev. F. GRAHAM, the town of Longtown, and most of the neighbouring
farm-houses.-Throughout the whole of this district, exultation and joy were "the order of the night."
Similar demonstrations of joy have taken place at Dalston, Whitehaven, Workington, Cockermouth, Maryport, Egremont, &c. &c.
