We learn, that the Rev. Wm. MONKHOUSE, vicar of Morland, is appointed by the Chancellor a surrogate for the granting of licences.

MELANCHOLY ACCIDENT.-The following accident, we regret to state, occurred on the evening of yesterday week. As Captain WATSON, of
Alston, (brother to the late town major of this city), in company with several ladies, was proceeding in a boat towards a sloop,
which was at anchor a short distance from the shore in the bay of Allonby, unfortunately stept on the gunwale, in order to lay hold
of another vessel. At this moment his weight causing the boat to heel, the females were thrown upon him, and they were all
precipitated into the water. Assistance was immediately procured, and the ladies were all saved; but Captain WATSON, together with
the boatman, unfortunately perished. The bodies, after some interval were taken out of the water; but the usual means to restore
suspended animation proved ineffectual.

whose united ages amounted to 269! They were all hale and active, and possessed an abundant flow of spirits.

We were happy to observe the very respectable and numerous company, which graced the Pic Nic Drama, on Monday last, for the benefit
of Mrs. MOSS, and who expressed their sense of the performance by repeated and continued plaudits. The whole was, indeed, most
excellently conducted, and could not fail to afford delight.-We understand that Mr. and Mrs. MOSS intend to visit Wigton; where, no
doubt, they will receive as hearty a welcome as in Carlisle.

An idea of the flourishing state of the coal trade at Whitehaven may be formed, from the circumstance of not less than 19,661
waggons of coals having been shipped off from the Earl of Lonsdale's works in six weeks, viz. between the first of July and 10th
August inst.; being an average of nearly 3,277 weekly.-Of this quantity, William Pitt alone, during the last week, furnished 1366
waggons.

BANK TOKENS.-A considerable number of counterfeits are already in circulation, but are easily distinguished by a little attention,
as they sound very badly, and are deficient in weight.
