Saturday 08 Jun 1811 (p. 2, col. 5 p. 3, col. 1 + p. 3, col. 4)
Our venerable sovereign entered into his 74th year on Tuesday last. The occasion was celebrated here in the usual manner. The Mayor,
the other members of the Corporate Body, the Officers of the 55th Regt. viz. Capt. HOG, Lieut. NICHOLSON, Ensign WISHART; Staff-Col.
GOSSELIN, Adj. MOSS, Dr. LOWRIE; Col. BIRKETT, and the Officers of the Loyal Carlisle Local Militia, and a respectable party of
Gentlemen, met in the afternoon at the Bush Inn, where his Majesty's health, that of the Prince Regent, and various other loyal
toasts, were drank. The several mail coaches, decorated with flags, paraded the streets.
The occasion was likewise celebrated in other places throughout the countyat Whitehaven, Maryport, Workington, &c.At the latter
place, the members of the Honourable Society of Workington, 164 in number, kept their 19th anniversary. In the forenoon, they went
in procession to church, where an excellent and appropriate sermon was delivered by the Rev. Peter HOW, rector, from 1. Thess. v.
9.They afterwards dined at the Assembly Room. J. C. CURWEN, Esq. and a number of other gentlemen honoured them their company
[sic].It is perhaps needless to add, that the evening was spent in appropriate festivity.
Since our last, have arrived here 42 very fine volunteers, for the 55th regiment, from the Royal Cumberland and Westmorland
Militias,3 from the Royal Stafford, 1 from the North York, 1 from the Argyle, 3 from the Royal Perthshire, and 8 from the East York
regiment of Militia, making altogether 58 fine fellows.
Another party, 44 in number, is soon expected, from the Dumfries and Berwickshire, and 3 from the North Devon, also 6 from the
Aberdeenshire Militias.
BENEFIT SOCIETIES.We are happy to observe, that these Societies, which have been productive of so much moral and physical good to
the middling and lower orders of society, have within these few years considerably increased their numbers, and consequently the
quantity of benefit. The several Societies in Carlisle held their annual festivals this week; and improved the occasion by a
reciprocity of social affection, mutual good will, and temperate conviviality. And on Tuesday last, the Bowness Friendly Society
held their 16th anniversary meeting. A very appropriate sermon was preached to them on the occasion, by the Rev. Mr. WILSON, from
Galatians, 31 chap. v. 13.The Society afterwards dined at the King's Arms, and spent the day with an harmony agreeable to the
occasion of their meeting.
Among the other improvements of which our City is susceptible, a common sewer is not the least, and the want of which in the
principal streets has been loudly complained of.We have, however, the prospect of seeing such a convenience being speedily and
generally adopted; as the proprietors of houses in Scotch-street, from the Scotch gate half way up the said street, have entered
into an agreement equally to contribute toward the undertaking; and we have no doubt that all the other proprietors will enter into
the same view.
Two boys, named John DOWLEY and Wm. JACKSON, have been committed to our gaol, charged with stealing out of the dwelling house of
Edward EDGAR, a bag containing 3s. 11d. in copper money:also, Wm. POWELL, charged with stealing 1½lb. of butter from John WATSON,
of Castle-Carrock.
The Royal Westmorland Militia, under the command of Major SCOTT, now quartered at Weedon Royal, Northamptonshire, were reviewed on
Wednesday, the 22d ultimo, by Major General DYOTT, commanding the Inland District, and who was pleased to pass the highest encomiums
on the soldier like appearance and discipline of the regiment. After which, the entire corps unanimously volunteered to serve in
Ireland, or any other part of the United Kingdom, in which his Majesty's Government might think proper to employ them.
Yesterday week, the Whitehaven Regiment of Local Militia were reviewed there by Major General the Earl of Dalhousie; who, in General
Orders, expressed his approbation of the state of discipline to which the battalion had arrived, which conferred the highest credit
upon both officers and privates. At a meeting of the officers, on Saturday last, a piece of plate (of the value of not less than one
hundred and twenty guineas) was unanimously voted to Lieut. Colonel HARTLEY, as a small token of personal esteem and gratitude for
his great and unremitting attention to his corps, since their being first enrolled as Volunteers. The term of service expired on
Sunday.
Phænomenon. On Friday evening the 31st ult. about six o'clock, after the tide had ebbed a few minutes, in the ordinary course, it
flowed again into Whitehaven harbour, at the rate of from three to four knots an hour; rising a foot and a half perpendicular at the
Old Quay end,and instantly receding at the same rate. This irregular flux and reflux were repeated four or five times, and in the
space of a few minutes, with such violence as to cause some vessels to break from their moorings. The wind, at the time, was S.E.
and blowing very moderately.
Considerable quantities of remarkably fine herrings have been caught near the mouth of this harbour within these few days.In
general, they measure 15 inches in length, and 5 in girth; and weigh about a quarter of a pound each.
In the night between Saturday and Sunday week, the corn mill, at Gisburne, in Craven, belonging to the Right Hon. Lord Ribblesdale,
was destroyed by fire. A considerable quantity of grain was consumed; and we believe the insurance did not near approach the loss.
A fine new vessel, of 224 tons, called the Wellington, was, yesterday, launched from Mr. COWAN's yard, Whitehaven.
The Julius Cæsar, M. IVER, of Whitehaven, for Jamaica, passed Antigua on the 26th of April; all well.
The Harriet, PEARSON, of Whitehaven, from Jamaica to London, having lost her rudder, was abandoned at sea. The crew was picked up by
an American vessel, and landed at Cork. The Captain is since dead.
