The 1st division of the Cumberland Militia will arrive in Carlisle on Wednesday first.
The annual meeting of the Subscribers to the Royal Lancasterian Institution, in this city, will be held in the Town-Hall, on
Thursday next; when we anticipate that increased support which this excellent establishment so justly deserves.See Adv.

A few days ago, as a boy was playing in a nailor's shop in Wigton, he communicated fire to his clothes by means of a nail-rod which
he got out of the fire; but, notwithstanding he was shockingly burned, he is now in a fair way of recovery.
Tuesday last, as Mr. Joseph HODGSON, of Brackenthwaite, was returning from Wigton market, sitting upon his cart,the horse took
fright, and Mr. H. was thrown between the fore-end board and the animal, in which situation he was dragged a considerable distance;
and the cart falling upon him, one of his legs was broken, and he was otherwise very severely bruised in several places.
On Saturday last, the following persons, viz. John BURGESS, William MILLAR, James REAY, Geo. BENNET, George HAYES, and George
GRAHAM, were convicted by the Magistrates in the penalty of forty shillings, with costs, for passing through, with horses and
cattle, a certain turnpike-gate, erected upon the turnpike road, leading from Smalmstown to the river Sark, at or near Snale Creek,
without paying the tolls due and payable, contrary to the statute in that case made and provided.
Last week, a quantity of carrots were taken up in the garden of Miss MOWETT, of Scar-bank, near Longtown; many of which weighed from
2lb. 10oz. to 3lbs. each.
On Tuesday last, a fire broke out in a barn at the Rubbing-House, near Workington, in the possession of Mr. John FORSTER, as farmer.
The barn was very large, and entirely filled with grain, principally wheat, consequently the loss is very serious. The fire was
first discovered about half-past three in the afternoon; every exertion was made to extinguish it, but to no purpose. It has not
been ascertained how the fire originated.
There is a man and his wife now living at Hayton, in the parish of Aspatria, named John and Mary HAUGHJohn aged 89 and his wife in
her 88th year. Every day throughout harvest this venerable couple reaped corn together; and, except on one day, they reaped on an
average 20 shocks or stooksand, on the above-mentioned day, 23 stooks, besides doing all their evening and morning's work.
A few days ago, a herring was taken by the crew of the Cooper fishing vessel, near Maryport, that measured 12 inches in length, 6½
inches in girth, and weighed 10¼oz. A herring of nearly the same size was caught by the crew of the Victory.
A dispensation has passed the great seal, to enable the Rev. Peter HOW, A. M. chaplain to the Right Rev. the Bishop of Chester, to
hold the vicarage of Isel, together with the valuable rectory of Workington, both in this county.
The Rev. Anthony DALZELL, of Workington, is appointed a surrogate, to grant marriage licences, take administration bonds, and prove
wills (within the archdeaconry of Richmond, in the diocese of Chester), by the Rev. and Worshipful George MARTIN, Doctor in
Divinity, Commissary in and throughout the said archdeaconry.
Thursday se'nnight, one Lawrence CARDIFF, a seaman, was killed by falling from the yard of vessel at Whitehaven.
On the night of Saturday the 14th inst. the dwelling-house under repair, and fitting up for Mr. R. BATEMAN, bookseller, in Appleby,
was broken into, and every drawer and box had been searched; fortunately there were few portable goods in the house excepting some
bed-hangings, which were taken off, and on the Monday following they were found carefully folded up and laid near the premises.
The Friends, DAWSON, of Workington, from Memel for Liverpool, was stranded in Dunnet Bay, Caithness, on the 8th instant, but
expected to be got off.
