About twelve o'clock on Monday night, an attempt was made to enter the premises of Mr. H. PEARSON, attorney-at-law, in
Castle-street, by forcing the windows. Mr. PEARSON, not having gone to bed, was alarmed at the noise; and arming himself with a
poker, sallied out. Three men in soldiers' uniforms ran off, and were pursued by Mr. PEARSON for some distance; but unfortunately
they made their escape.
The poor prisoners in Carlisle gaol, acknowledge with grititude [sic] the receipt of two-cart loads of coals presented to them by
the High Sheriff, which were divided amongst them by Mr. JACKSON.
There is now growing in the garden of Mr. Richard GATE, of Baurgh, near Wigton, a fine apple, which was in full bloom when the
former crop was plucked from the tree.
On Thursday se'nnight, Mr. Thomas FLETCHER, of the King's Arms public house, in Cockermouth, was unfortunately killed in loading a
wood-waggon.-Coroner's verdict, accidental death.
Mr. Joseph HIND, of Naworth Castle, gardener to the Right Hon. the Earl of Carlisle, has in the garden at Naworth, a rose bush that
has, been in full bloom all the summer months, and is at this time loaded with roses of a most beautiful red colour. Notwithstanding
the severe frost last week, it still retains its beauty.
On the 27th ult. a duck, belonging to Mr. Robert JOHNSTON, of Brunstock, brought out of the shell 15 ducklings-a remarkable instance
of maturity.
On Saturday se'nnight, the body of a male infant was found in a hat box, on the town moor, Newcastle, in a putrid state. On Monday,
a young woman named ROBINSON, before an inmate of the house of correction, went to the court to swear she was the mother of it, and
had murdered it; but on investigation, the surgeon proved that she had never had a child. Her object, it appears, was to procure a
comfortable lodging for the winter.
